abstract

background : the brain is a rare site of metastases from ovarian cancer. limited data are available on prognostic factors, standard treatment, and survival. knowledge of clinical prognostic factors would help the management of patients with brain metastases. the aim of this study is to evaluate the impact of clinical factors and treatment modalities on survival in patients with brain metastases from ovarian cancer. methods : we performed a retrospective analysis of an electronic database of patients with brain metastases from ovarian primary treated at clatterbridge centre for oncology. results : a total of 20 patients with brain metastases from an ovarian primary were treated from april 2001-february 2011. median age at occurrence of brain metastases was 55 years. the median time from primary diagnosis to occurrence of brain metastases was 23 months. median overall survival from diagnosis of brain metastases was 9 months. poor ecog performance status, platinum resistance, and advanced figo staging were the most significant adverse variables identified. median survival was 13 months for platinum sensitive patients and 6 months for platinum resistant patients. conclusion : platinum sensitivity is an important prognostic factor in patients with brain metastases from an ovarian primary tumor. multimodal therapy that consists of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy should be considered where feasible.

Prognostic role of platinum sensitivity in patients with brain metastases from ovarian cancer: results of a German multicenter study.

BACKGROUND Ovarian cancer is the leading cause of death in women with gynecological malignancies. Brain metastases are considered an uncommon metastatic site. Only few data exist on prognostic factors for this patient collective. PATIENTS AND METHODS A multicenter retrospective chart review was carried out including all patients with histologically confirmed ovarian cancer from six different ...

Brain Metastases from Ovarian Carcinoma

This paper will focus on knowledge related to brain metastases from ovarian carcinoma. So far, less than 600 cases were documented in the literature with an incidence among ovarian carcinoma patients ranging from 0.29% to 11.6%. The ovarian carcinoma was usually an advanced-stage epithelial serous carcinoma, and the median interval between diagnosis of ovarian carcinoma and brain metastases was...

Endometriosis is the independent prognostic factor for survival in Chinese patients with epithelial ovarian carcinoma

BACKGROUND Clinico-pathological characteristics and possible prognostic factors among women with epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) with or without concurrent endometriosis were explored. METHOD We retrospectively identified 304 patients with EOC treated primarily at Peking Union Medical College Hospital with median follow-up time of 60 months. RESULTS Of 304 patients with EOC, concurrent e...

LAPTM4B overexpression is an independent prognostic marker in ovarian carcinoma.

Lysosome-associated protein transmembrane 4beta (LAPTM4B) is a member of the mammalian 4-tetratransmembrane spanning protein superfamily, which is strongly expressed in some solid malignancies. The present study investigated the correlation of LAPTM4B expression with clinicopathological features and prognosis in ovarian carcinoma. Expression of LAPTM4B was evaluated semiquantitatively by immuno...

Netrin-1 Expression Is an Independent Prognostic Factor for Poor Patient Survival in Brain Metastases

The multifunctional molecule netrin-1 is upregulated in various malignancies and has recently been presented as a major general player in tumorigenesis leading to tumor progression and maintenance in various animal models. However, there is still a lack of clinico-epidemiological data related to netrin-1 expression. Therefore, the aim of our study was to elucidate the association of netrin-1 ex...

Prognostic significance of hemoglobin levels in patients with primary epithelial ovarian carcinoma undergoing platinum-based chemotherapy.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic impact of hemoglobin (Hb) levels before and throughout the course of platinum-based chemotherapy in patients with primary epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). Medical records of patients who had undergone initial surgery followed by platinum-based chemotherapy for EOC were retrospectively studied. Univariate and Cox-regression models were used to...
